.deb for Ubuntu 20.04?

Hi,
I'm considering to upgrade my Ubuntu 18.04.6 to Ubuntu 20.04.4 (yes, I
know, it's about time!).
My understanding is that there was no jpilot for 20.04 when it was
released. In fact, that was the main reason why I haven't upgraded yet, I
do depend on jpilot...
Is jpilot still missing on 20.04?
I have looked for a PPA, and found one, but still for 18.04.
Is there a newer jpilot for 20.04 somewhere?

TIA!  /Ph.

Hi Jon,
I have a running 20.04.4 now, but when I attempt to install jpilot from the
latest .deb package at
https://www.jpilot.org/download/
I got an error about a missing library,
libpisock9 (version >=0.12.5)
That didn't exist in the Ubuntu repository.
I finally found it at
https://www.jpilot.org/ubuntu-20.04/
as

2021-02-25 libpisock9_0.13.0_amd64.deb
https://www.jpilot.org/ubuntu-20.04/libpisock9_0.13.0_amd64.deb
2021-02-25 libpisock9_0.12.5-dfsg-2build2_amd64.deb
https://www.jpilot.org/ubuntu-20.04/libpisock9_0.12.5-dfsg-2build2_amd64.deb

Wouldn't it be worth moving those links to the "downloads" page too?

Anyway, I ended up installing the former (0.13.0), and everything seems to
be working fine now.
The font it uses is a bit funky (kinda thick, short and bold), but still
very usable and not a big deal.

Thanks!

Hi Philippe,

I'm glad to hear it is working for you!  And that is a great idea to add those links to the Downloads page, perhaps even with instructions for which package to install first.

While on the subject, I'm working on building a snap package of JPilot which will hopefully simplify the install process as well as add visibility to the project on the Snap store.  It's not my favorite method, but it appears to be easier than trying to maintain all the library packages in the Ubuntu repos.

Thanks,
Jon

It seems to me that this is a result of the fact that JPilot and pilot-
link were dropped from Debian Stable.  Ubuntu is derived from Debian,
so presumably it can no longer inherit those files from the Debian
repositories.  In particular, JPilot uses pilot-link, so that has to be
available first.

I run Debian, not Ubuntu.  When I found that these programs were not
available in the latest version of Debian, I kept one computer running
the old version, just so I could continue using the PDA tools.  I now
need to update that machine to the latest Debian, so I am going to
install a non-Debian derived distro (eg. Fedora) to an external drive,
from which I hope to be able to run pilot-link and JPilot.

All the best,
Chris

I don't think a non-debian distro is needed.  Pilot-link got taken out
because it depended on python2.  Jpilot got taken out because it
depended on pilot-link and GTK2.  I built pilot-link debian packages
with the python2 removed and jpilot as been updated (not an upgrade) to
GTK3.  If you wanted to run the old packages you could just use apt to
install GTK2 and python2. Those are still in the repositories.

I run Debian, not Ubuntu.  When I found that these programs were not

While on the subject, I'm working on building a snap package of

add visibility to the project on the Snap store.  It's not my

Hi Jon,
I have a running 20.04.4 now, but when I attempt to install jpilot
from the
latest .deb package at
https://www.jpilot.org/download/
I got an error about a missing library,
libpisock9 (version >=0.12.5)
That didn't exist in the Ubuntu repository.
I finally found it at
https://www.jpilot.org/ubuntu-20.04/
as

2021-02-25 libpisock9_0.13.0_amd64.deb
https://www.jpilot.org/ubuntu-20.04/libpisock9_0.13.0_amd64.deb

Wouldn't it be worth moving those links to the "downloads" page too?

Anyway, I ended up installing the former (0.13.0), and everything
seems to
be working fine now.
The font it uses is a bit funky (kinda thick, short and bold), but
still
very usable and not a big deal.

Thanks!

Hi,

My understanding is that there was no jpilot for 20.04 when it was

Is jpilot still missing on 20.04?
I have looked for a PPA, and found one, but still for 18.04.
Is there a newer jpilot for 20.04 somewhere?
