Exporting J-Pilot address book contents

Hello:

Sadly and much to my chagrin, my trusty Blackberry 6320 finally gave up the Berry.

I tried all the tricks I learned in the ~10 years I have had it with me but was not able to do anything for it.

Not having been able to find a used one in half-decent condition, I have no choice but to start using a Samsung idiot-phone (an A022 slab) I was gifted some time ago, at least till I can get a decent cellphone that I can carry in a pocket, does not invade my everything and can trust not to leak my data to whoever runs that scam.

[pause to calm down]

Fortunately, I have been using J-Pilot ever since I moved to Linux more or less at the same time I started using the 6320 so all my data is safe there.

All this screed just to ask for guidance:

I need to copy a relatively small amount of the contacts (20/30?)I have in J-Pilot to the idiot-phone. ie: just what I use often and probably nothing else.

I am (obviously) in no way willing to use any external services/servers/cloud etc. to do that so what I need is to be able to export the needed contacts from J-Pilot (vCard (Optimised …) and import them to the idiot-phone.

I will put these records on J-Pilot’s QuickList and export it to a single vCard file but I need to edit it to contain just telephone numbers and possibly email addresses.

Anyone here does something like that? How do you keep it current/updated?

Thanks in advance.

Best,

JHM

Hello Julius,

welcome in the club of broken device users ;-) Time will make us the
majority.

For years I exported J-Pilot data into vCard format, which then can be
loaded in GMail on the PC. Alternatively, you can also import locally. For
transmitting files between PC and Android I use termux
http://eklausmeier.goip.de/blog/2020/03-12-ssh-and-rsync-for-android-termux/,
i.e., scp and rsync.

Nowadays I rarely use the Android builtin address book, but rather use a web
interface
http://eklausmeier.goip.de/blog/2023/05-06-accessing-j-pilot-data-from-mobile-and-web
on the Android device. One reason being: deleting the previous stuff
http://eklausmeier.goip.de/blog/2020/03-19-j-pilot-data-on-android-phone-contacts
.

I hope this helps.

Regards,

Elmar.

Hello:

welcome in the club …

Thanks.

Still have my Palm T|X working quite well and a couple of Palm IIIs (IIIxe and unused IIIe) in reserve.  8^)

… exported J-Pilot data into vCard format …

Yes, that I can do. The thing is to edit it properly, trimming what I don’t want in the phone. ie: just phone numbers and maybe email addresses.

… loaded in GMail …

Not that. I refuse to do anything with my data on external services, especially Google.

I learned long ago that when it is free, you are the product. As always, YMMV.

I can copy the vCard file via USB to the phone and the native address book will import it.

The bespoke J-Pilot QuickList with the contacts I want in the phone will be always up to date.

I just have to find way to send an updated vCard file once every so often to the phone and import it again.

But then I’d have to see about merging/duplicates issues …

Thanks for your input.

Best,

JHM

There are a number of open source tools for editing/managing vcard files.

For instance, Vcard Studio: https://app.zdechov.net/vcard-studio/

Or Rolo: https://github.com/libvc/rolo

Or any of a number of PIM apps like kaddressbook, khard, kontact,
evolution, etc.

Thunderbird also has a good vcard plugin called CardBook.

Hello:

… open source tools for editing/managing vcard …

Yes, I have already seen the two you mention.

rolo did not do well with a vcard file with more than one subject/entry, selecting only the first one to edit.

But vcard-studio seems to do the job properly. Pity, I liked the idea of doing the job in the terminal.

I don’t use anything with a k (kde) as it will usually pull in a huge amount of dependencies and I don’t use Thunderbird.

My email client for the last ~27 years has been Pegasus Mail (under Wine).

Thanks for your input.

Best,

JHM

The vCard format is very simple, you may script the edit with e.g. sed (or
whatever suits you):
sed -n '/^BEGIN/p;/^N/p;/^EMAIL/p;/^TEL/p;/^END/p' file.vcf

I just have to find way to send an updated vCard file once every so

I think the native Android Contacts app will try and find duplicates when
you import a contact. Or you simply empty the address book before
importing...

Hello:

… vCard format is very simple

So it seems.

The problem (quite frequent in setting IT standards) is that every T, D & H wants to have or has their own version of a presumably established one so as to be able to get a larger piece of the pie for themselves.

Here is a page I came across recently that sort of explains what was going in back in 2017, I don’t think it has changed much.

https://alessandrorossini.org/the-sad-story-of-the-vcard-format-and-its-lack-of-interoperability/

… native Android Contacts app will try and find duplicates …

Yes, I think it does.

… simply empty the address book before importing...

That is what I plan on doing till I find a better way.

Thank you for your input.

Best,

JHM

I know at least one person that used to export to vcard with jpilot and then import that into the phone. That is time consuming, IMO.

Have you looked at Nextcloud? You can store your address book there and sync the phone and the PC running Nextcloud.
