I know this involves a plugin, but I wanted to check if other people had
this issue.
I recall using the Picture Sync plugin with Jpilot & my Zire 72. It
worked well. Unfortunately, that computer died, an I've set up Jpilot
on a new machine.
When I went to install the plugin, it required building from source.
I do not recall having to do so with the previous plugin. Was it
formerly part of the package? Am I missing something?

In JPilot version 2.0.2 there is a bug https://github.com/juddmon/jpilot/issues/61 which prevents Pics&Videos plugin from working.
The extended alternative JPilotMediaPlugin https://github.com/CoSoCo/JPilotMediaPlugin was recently updated (version 1.1) to work around that bug.
The alternative does not only retrieve the photos, it actually syncs. The binary in the attachment should work on Ubuntu.
Hopefully I could help you.
Ulf
P.S.: The underlying libpisock currently is in progress to eliminate some bugs https://github.com/desrod/pilot-link/pulls, so there will be updates for JPilot and JPilotMediaPlugin soon to profit from the fixes.
