Problems with Linux Devuan Daedalus

Hello:

Forced to upgrade my Linux Devuan Beowulf to Chimaera, I was then boxed into a corner by problems with the native nouveau driver and had no choice but to upgrade Daedalus (stable) which seems to have solved my twin video cards/multiple monitor problems.

:~$ uname -a

Linux devuan 6.1.0-21-amd64 #1 SMP PREEMPT_DYNAMIC Debian 6.1.90-1 (2024-05-03) x86_64 GNU/Linux

:~$

I would have happily remained on Beowulf as, my hardware is ca. 2010.

But here we are and I now have a problem with my J-Pilot 1.8.2 which had been working perfectly well till now.

The problem is that I can sync the Palm to the desktop+backup (icon with Palm and red arrow) but if I want to just sync, the process freezes at “Fetching ‘Saved Preferences (Creator ID ‘psys’) … OK” and I cannot shut it down.

If I insist, I get a ‘Warning’ pop-up about the window being busy / not responding asking if I want to terminate the application, to which I click ‘Yes’.

On starting up again, I see that J-Pilot it has not maintained the previous screen geometry.

If I correct this and shut it down, on starting it up again the geometry is as I had set it before so it is obviously a consequence of the forced termination.

The system recognises the Palm as usual:

~$ lsusb

—- snip —-

~$

The output of a rolling dmesg screen as this happens is this:

Hello:

I think I have found what may be a lead to the problem at hand.

It is not specifically related to j-pilot but it does have to do with mtp-probe and my Palm not being an MTP device.

See here https://lists.debian.org/debian-user/2017/12/msg00834.html

... recently moved to Debian Stretch, and gave a little more time to this problem. I noticed that udev raises an error saying "... was not an MTP device", and after some search on the net I managed to make VueScan work by adding a specific udev rule:

root@debian:~# cat /etc/udev/rules.d/69-FS4000US-MTP.rules
ATTR{idVendor}=="04a9", ATTR{idProduct}=="3042", SYMLINK+="libmtp-%k", MODE="660", GROUP="scanner", ENV{ID_MTP_DEVICE}="1", ENV{ID_MEDIA_PLAYER}="1", TAG+="uaccess"
root@debian:~#

The problem I have is that I don’t know exactly what to do with this information ie: how to write up a specific udev rule for the Palm.

If any one has a clue, I’d appreciate the input.

Thanks in advance.

Best,

JHM

Hi Henry,

I too observe, that JPilot freezes from time to time when syncing. Sometimes the preferences (geometry and others) are lost after, sometimes not. But after restart, it normally works again. I'm ob Ubuntu.
If I run jpilot -d, then I often can see some SEGFAULT errors, which mostly don't harm, but sometimes. So maybe run JPilot in the debug mode, to find more info.
By the way, I use JPilot version 2.0.1, because version 1.8.2 seems to not work properly on 64 bit systems.

Hello:

I too observe, that JPilot freezes from time to time …

That is something that has mostly happened when I have had a faulty connection/cable.

… JPilot version 2.0.1, because version 1.8.2 seems to not work properly on 64 bit systems.

Fortunately not my case. I have had this (Sun Ultra 24 WS) for many years now and used v1.8.2 from when it was published by Judd and it has been so without issues.

The problem at hand (seems to me) is udev and the rule I need to get written up for j-pilot to sync without freezing up.

I have been searching the net for a sample rule but to no avail.

I will try to start it up with the -d and see if I can get more information.

Thanks for your input.

Best,

JHM

Hello:

I will try to start it up …

For whatever reason this problem has (for the moment) gone away.

But I have come across another one which I will address in another thread.

Thanks to all for your input.

Best,

JHM
