Help needed for jpilot installation

Thanks for the opportunity to be a part of the J-Pilot.org group. I have
used jpilot since January 2010 it is my primary calendar. I have had no
problem installing it on several versions of Ubuntu until 19.04 and more
recent versions. I am a Ubuntu user for 99% of my computer needs. Right
now my only use of W10 is to update my Garmin GPS unit. I am not a
strong user of the terminal but with help I get bye.

I have had help from several Phoenix Linux User Group members with
j-pilot but need additional help with Ubuntu 20.04. I was provided with
three files, jpilot1.8.2, jpilot-install, & jpilot1.8.2.tar.gz. I have
expanded the tar file and tried to use it with the first two but I need
help. I have found reference to GTK+2.0.3 but I do not understand how to
use it. I have been able to transfer the calendar information from one
installation to another. I am not sure if there is a way to exclude
existing files from becoming double entries.

I thank you in advance for any assistance you can provide.

Boyd,

If I understand what you've written there is no jpilot package in a ubuntu
repository. Is this correct? (I use only Slackware and know nothing about
the *buntus.)

You list three files: jpilot1.8.2, jpilot-install, & jpilot1.8.2.tar.gz. The
last is obviouly the source code. In a terminal use the 'file' command on
the first two to learn what type of file each one is.

What you can do is untar the source code (tar xzvf jpilot1.8.2.tar.gz), then
cd to that directory. In there run these three commands in sequance:
configure; make; sudo make-install. Whether ubuntu puts an incon link on
your desktop is to be determined, but you can then try typing at the bash
prompt $ jpilot [Enter] and see if it does load.

Rich

Rich,
I'm in the same boat. The hitch is that you need to install pilot-link and,
in doing so, found

E: Unable to locate package libgcrypt11-dev
E: Unable to locate package libpisock-dev
when running
apt-get install autopoint intltool libtool libgcrypt11-dev libgtk2.0-dev
libpisock-dev.

apt-get install does not find libgcrypt11-dev or libpisock-dev, so I'm
stuck there.

Kevin,

Well, darn! I wish I could help both of you but I know nothing about Ubuntu.
Slackware does not separate headers and other files; I've no idea why other
distributions do so since disk space has not been an issue for a couple of
decades, at least.

I know there are ubuntu web fora and I suggest asking there where to get the
packages you need.

Good luck,

Rich

List,

I built jpilot and pilot-link on ubuntu 20.20 back in January by
installing GTK-2 and python 2.7 and some other things.  I did not take
notes as I was planning on updating these to build without deprecated
dependencies.  Thanks to David Malia and David Desrosiers for their time
in this effort so far.  I did keep the packages though.  I uploaded them
here.

https://github.com/juddmon/www.jpilot/tree/gh-pages/ubuntu-20.20

I just installed them all on a fairly clean 20.20 install by doing:

sudo apt install -f ./python-pisock-dbg_0.12.5-dfsg-2build2_amd64.deb
sudo apt install -f ./python-pisock_0.12.5-dfsg-2build2_amd64.deb
sudo apt install -f ./pilot-link_0.12.5-dfsg-2build2_amd64.deb
sudo apt install -f ./libpisync1_0.12.5-dfsg-2build2_amd64.deb
sudo apt install -f ./libpisock-dev_0.12.5-dfsg-2build2_amd64.deb
sudo apt install -f ./libpisock9_0.12.5-dfsg-2build2_amd64.deb
sudo apt install -f ./jpilot-plugins_1.8.2-2_amd64.deb
sudo apt install -f ./jpilot_1.8.2-2_amd64.deb

I have not had time to look into the yum errors that are given and its
possible that it will still need dependencies installed. Jpilot does
come up though.

I attempted a build but had too many errors and unresolved dependencies to
continue. See attached log.

I just installed them all on a fairly clean 20.20 install by doing:

sudo apt install -f ./python-pisock-dbg_0.12.5-dfsg-2build2_amd64.deb
sudo apt install -f ./python-pisock_0.12.5-dfsg-2build2_amd64.deb

sudo apt install -f ./libpisock9_0.12.5-dfsg-2build2_amd64.deb
sudo apt install -f ./jpilot-plugins_1.8.2-2_amd64.deb
sudo apt install -f ./jpilot_1.8.2-2_amd64.deb

I have not had time to look into the yum errors that are given and its
possible that it will still need dependencies installed. Jpilot does
come up though.

I have had help from several Phoenix Linux User Group members with
j-pilot but need additional help with Ubuntu 20.04. I was provided
with three files, jpilot1.8.2, jpilot-install, & jpilot1.8.2.tar.gz. I
have expanded the tar file and tried to use it with the first two but
I need help. I have found reference to GTK+2.0.3 but I do not
understand how to use it. I have been able to transfer the calendar
information from one installation to another. I am not sure if there
is a way to exclude existing files from becoming double entries.

I thank you in advance for any assistance you can provide.

It was attached to my email message. Here it is again.

But it is moot, since I found Jpilot in Synaptic and successfully installed
it.
