Help with installing packages

In an earlier email Judd provided a list of packages required to be
installed in order to allow installation of J-Pilot in Ubuntu. What is
the procedure to add or install the listed packages such as pilot-link,
libpisock9. I am sure this is basic but I need help.

I have some new packages I have not put up yet.  I also have a GTK3
package that I have not announced yet.  You are welcome to be a guinea
pig for that.  If you can wait a day or two I can get those up
somewhere.  I'll try to get to it tonight.

If anyone knows how to setup a PPA or wants to learn that would be a
good thing to have.

Judd,

I don't do ubuntus as I'm really happy with Slackware, so I ask, does the
above mean you have a new version of jpilot for us?

Stay well,

Rich

Only if you want to try the GTK3 version.  Some of the GUI looks
better.  Its more likely to have bugs.

I just got done compiling new Debian packages for Ubuntu Focal Fossa
(20.04).

I wrote this really hack-ish way to install things for now because
people are having trouble and I want to help.  We really should get a
PPA repository working.  These scripts will download and install jpilot
1.8.2, which is the same really old (and really stable) code compiled
for Focal Fossa.  Optionally, jpilot 2.0.0, which has huge changes
required to compile and run with GTK3.  A ton of work went into this by
David Malia and I.

Use jpilot 1.8.2 if you fear change.
Use jpilot 2.0.0 if you do not fear change and want to report bugs.  You
can always uninstall one and install the other.

Run these commands:

mkdir temp && cd temp
wget http://www.jpilot.org/ubuntu-20.04/DOWNLOAD.sh
wget http://www.jpilot.org/ubuntu-20.04/INSTALL.sh
wget http://www.jpilot.org/ubuntu-20.04/REMOVE.sh

chmod +x DOWNLOAD.sh INSTALL.sh REMOVE.sh
./DOWNLOAD.sh
./INSTALL.sh

The INSTALL.sh script will ask which jpilot you want to install.

Good luck and penguinspeed.

Judd,

Since the selected items in comboboxes don't display their text it would be
worth trying.

I'll keep the 1.82 executable binary as a backup since I use jpilot daily.

Rich
