I sync my centro without visor.  In fact, using visor prevented me from syncing.

In "Files...Preferences...Settings", place 'usb:' (no quotes, but with
the colon) in the 'Serial Port field.

On Ubuntu, make sure the default gnome-pilot isn't getting in the way.
 Under "System...Preferences...PalmOS Devices" remove everything in
the "Devices" tab.
