You could link some common bin /usr/bin say to it.
" ln -s /opt/gnome/bin/gtk-config /usr/bin/gtk-config "
I also run SuSE 9.0 with gtk 1.2.10 and I could send you my config file 
if you need.  SuSE 9.0 now puts it in /opt/gnome/bin as you point out.
Your kde and kernel should make no difference short of USB features.
